The 2017 opening ceremony of the 2017 Confederations cup kicks off in a few hours in Russia and games will be played across four cities: Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, and Sochi. But before you tune in to watch the action, here are a few fascinating facts about the Confederations Cup;
— This year’s edition will be the first ever to be hosted by Russia and the third time for the European continent.
— Defending champions and winners of the previous three Confederation Cups (2005, 2009, 2013), Brazil failed to qualify this year’s edition, the first time since 1995.
— The tournament will for the first time in its history implement the use of goal line technology.
— 2017 will be the first time ever for three nations make a debut together in any Confederations Cup. They are; the hosts Russia, Chile and Portugal.
— Clubs from 30 different countries are represented at Russia 2017. Bayer Leverkusen, Porto, Spartak Moscow, Sporting Lisbon and Wellington Phoenix lead the way with five players each.
— The oldest player in the tournament at 37 years of age is the Uruguayan defender, Andrés Scotti Ponce de León who may become the 4th oldest to ever play in the tournament if he plays for just a single minute… lol.
— Tahiti has the two youngest players in the competition; Yohann Tihoni at 18 and Rainui Aroita who follows closely at 19.
