Born on 7 October 1931, Desmond Mpilo Tutu is a retired South African arch Bishop and a social rights activists. One of the greatest South Africa has ever had. He is the second of four children. As a child he wanted to become a medical doctor but when his family could not afford it, he went into teaching like his dad. He later resigned and went on to study theology.
Desmond Tutu is most remembered for his fight against the apartheid regime in South Africa, along other great figures like Miriam Makeba and Nelson Mandela. Some of his works include;
– The Rainbow People of God: The Making of a Peaceful Revolution, Doubleday, 1994.
– Worshipping Church in Africa
– Crying in the Wilderness
– The Words of Desmond Tutu
– No Future without Forgiveness.
He serves as Honorary Co-Chairman for the World Justice Project. Some of his achievements include:
- Honorary Companion of Honour by the British sovereign, 2015
- Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Barack Obama in 2009
- Spiritual Leadership Award from the international Humanity’s Team movement, 2009
- In 2009 he was conferred the degree “Doctor Theologiae honoris causa”by the University of Vienna
- Named an honorary patron of the University Philosophical Society, Trinity College, Dublin, 2006
- He was the first recipient of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Award, 1996
The father of four has also been actively involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, gender inequality, etc. A real role model he is.
