Human Rights watch (HRW) has criticized Chinese government’s attitude towards peaceful proponents of human rights and democracy, following the death in custody of dissident and public intellectual, Liu Xiaobo. He died today following complications of liver cancer in a Shenyang hospital while being guarded by state security.
The HRW also recounted on its website that the last time a Nobel Peace laureate died in state custody was in 1938, when pacifist Carl von Ossietzky died of tuberculosis under guard in a hospital in Nazi Germany.
Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010 for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China. Very little is known about the circumstances surrounding his arrest, as only his closest family members were given access to him while in custody and hospital.
